One day in October, I read one of my devotionals. It spoke about God’s faithfulness, and it encouraged me to remind myself of what He has done in the past.
To be honest, I was reading that devotion for the second time. Earlier, I had prayed to God and submitted my requests to Him. Yet even after praying, I still found myself wondering if God would answer. I re-read it because I needed reassurance.
As I was reading and battling those thoughts, I felt the Holy Spirit say to me:
“You prayed to God yesterday that you wanted to have a successful day at work, and you did. Do you think it wasn’t God who answered that?”
That question hit me. I jumped out of bed, and all I could say was, “Lord have mercy.”
For weeks, I had been declaring Nehemiah 1:11 before going to work. And truly, God came through for me. The days I expected to be the hardest ended up being easier than I imagined.
Sitting there, I realized something: God had been immeasurably good to me in ways I did not even notice.
And it brought me back to one word God had been teaching me for months: contentment.
Recognizing the blessings we overlook
As Christians, we can fall into the habit of labeling blessings as “big” or “small,” “real testimonies” or “just normal life.”
But when we focus only on what we consider “actual blessings,” we can miss the everyday gifts God gives us.
Waking up each day is not automatic. Having food to eat, being sheltered from many unpleasant realities, and having family and friends placed in our lives are blessings worth recognizing and thanking God for.
Life is spiritual, and a lot happens each day, both planned and unplanned.
When waiting makes us forget who God is
As I meditated on this, I learned that when I start questioning whether God will answer my prayers, I can forget His identity: the I AM, not the I WAS. He has never changed.
And in that moment, I can also forget all He has already done for me.
Many times, we worry because we have given God a time frame. But He has His own time. When He does not work within ours, we can become frustrated and question His credibility.
Encouragement
Take a moment to assess what God has already done for you. He has done enough, and He will do it again. Give Him time. Let Him have His way.
As hard as waiting can be, keep trusting. One thing I have come to know about this Man is that when He finally shows up, He does it as big as His name and in all of His glory.
So today, choose contentment on purpose.
And if you have been overlooking the “small” things, let this be your reminder: God is faithful in the everyday.
May the Lord open your eyes to the quiet blessings around you, and fill your heart with gratitude and contentment.
